i’m going to hop in the shower after i finish doing the dishes, then spend the day in a corner reading the mysterious stranger for APENG. I’m going to annotate it too so I can get some practice and keep my brain in English mode over the break.

after that I have an APUSH mtg. @ the library. we’re writing the song for our apush extra credit.i think we’ll get the lyrics done sometime this week, and then shoot the video next week.

then later tonight is movie with friends and dinner at CPK. So excited, we haven’t hung out in so long.

I just beat Misty in Pokemon Leaf Green, and since I chose Charmander, it took forEVER to level up my Pikachu and Bellsprout to take out her level 18 Staryu and level 21 Starmie.

But anyway, it brought back this one memory of last year’s speech picnic, where we were supposed to go around and say our name, grade, and favorite pokemon.

fullerton competition (long post, kind of depressing, read at your own risk)

so yesterday’s Fullerton Competition made me mad and confused and frustrated, but also really excited and happy, because the Arcadia Debate Forum dominated! Congrats to everyone who trophied! nancy, ray, carl, michelle, amit, greg, leah, you guys all rock and kicked butt and definitely deserved and earned it.

so as you can see, the majority of us broke to semis and finals and got trophies and medals. what confuses me is that i didn’t even make semis. i broke finals and fall varsity, and improved on the things the judges said then (emotion, hand gestures, slowing down), so i don’t know what i did wrong. and i felt so sure that i would at least make semis. we all spoke of it like it was a sure thing, that we would all break semis and some of us finals, because we knew our talent in comparison to the other speeches was greater, and we really believed in our success. I guess it was just disbelief when I didn’t see my name on the semis list. I think I was the only OI who didn’t break, and after my success at Fall Varsity, I was really disappointed and surprised.

but i remember this one point in my speech in quarter rounds, when i called george bush a bastard, my judge kind of laughed. i thought it was some sign of agreement, like she thought it was funny or she agreed with the author of my speech, but maybe it was like ‘oh you just cursed, 7th place for you!’ And 4/7 people from my quarters round made it to semis. Most of them were pretty good, but I felt that I was in the better half of that round. And I don’t think I’m being arrogant because I know the pros and cons of my speech, and in comparison to others, I know that my performance was better than some. And my performance in quarters was better than in finals at Fall Varsity.

but i don’t want to bash other speeches to make myself feel better or to justify what i think is unfair, because that sets me on a path for arrogance and conceit, and i don’t want to say i worked harder than everyone else, because i don’t know if that’s true. i don’t want to make my team feel bad for their success because i didn’t make it, it’s my problem, not theirs. and i definitely didn’t want to rain on their parade, so i just went home after watching leah in the semis round.

and what was really odd about the competition was that a lot of things i believed about OI, that you have to be passionate about what you’re speaking about, and have something in it you believe in, and bring to others’ attention something that’s important, was disproven by some of the speeches who made semis and finals. maybe you just have to be funny and weird. apparently it doesn’t matter how powerful your performance is (Michelle Zhu didn’t even make finals, that is BULLSHIT) but whether or not you make the judges laugh (Stroke Girl D:<) or if you’re a cute little kid pretending to be Will Ferrel (I didn’t think his speech was funny at all but it was probably just me being bitter)

i guess i have to wait for the critique sheets to come back. maybe it’s nothing i did wrong, maybe my judge was a conservative republican who really loves bush and ahted that i was bashing them. but just sitting here thinking about what i could’ve done wrong and the success of others in comparison to my failure and how i feel that i wasted my entire day yesterday is killing me. i really wanted a trophy, or at least a medal, and I thought my speech was pretty good, so just having that faith in yourself crushed down kind of hurts.

so now i need to stop being selfish and victimizing myself. not everyone made finals, semis, or even quarters, and you contributed to our second place sweepstakes win. who cares if people who were less prepared went farther than you, that’s not their fault, and it’s not yours either. Be happy for others, don’t let your sadness kill their happiness, because that is selfish and rude. Not everything is about you, so deal with it. And just because you thought your speech and your performances were better than others does not mean the judges did. Your opinion of a speech does not matter at a competition. Get over it and move on. Chalk it up to experience, and do better at the next competition. Berkeley, the Arcadia Debate Forum is coming for you next!

Time for chores and Powwow party. Maybe some retail therapy/Christmas shopping to soothe my bruised ego. Peace out beansprouts!

I’m sorry, but it disturbs and upsets me when I see people on Tumblr saying that they “hate” their mom and/or dad.

They didn’t let you go out with your friends or take that trip from SoCal to NorCal or they take away your cell phone after a $300 phone bill and all you can say is, “I hate you, mom and dad!” No. You don’t say that. Have you ever thought that they do these things to protect you or teach you a valuable life lesson?

As you may know, I’m not a big fan of the word “hate.” In fact, I hate the word “hate.” It’s too much of a strong word for me to handle. I say it less than “fuck,” “shit,” and “damn.” That’s how often I avoid saying such a word.

I don’t understand how you can hate the two people that gave you the gift of life. They shelter you, feed you, clothe you, raise you, etc.

I guess it’s comprehensible if your mom gave birth to you at 15 and gave you up because she couldn’t handle a child by herself and the baby daddy left her for good, but even if you were adopted by two other people, did your new guardian(s) not provide for you, ever? I mean, they cared enough to take care of you.

Yes, they can do things that annoy you and tick you off, and I can understand that you disagree with or only dislike them at times, but you should be able to get over those things fairly quickly. You have to know that they love you back unconditionally, no matter what. You are their child.

It takes a lot to hate someone, but I will never ever say that I hate my parents. Not my mom, my dad, my stepmom, or my stepdad.

If they’re considered family, they deserve my love.

Period.
